Take action

Decisions on pumped storage projects in the Sahyadri are still being made: study terms, clearances, gram sabhas and hearings. Here is what you can do, and who is already working on the ground.

What you can do

  1. Know the facts. Read the story and check the projects near your district: trees, forest land, villages and clearance status.
  2. Go to the gram sabha. Under PESA and the Forest Rights Act, forest land in many of these villages cannot be diverted without the gram sabha's consent. Attend, ask questions and get your objection recorded in the minutes.
  3. Object at the public hearing. Every project that needs an environmental clearance must hold a public hearing, announced at least 30 days ahead. Send written objections before the date and speak at the hearing. Keep a copy with the received stamp.
  4. Ask for the papers. File an RTI for the Terms of Reference, EIA report, forest clearance proposal and tree count. See the glossary for what each one is.
  5. Write to the decision makers. Write to the Expert Appraisal Committee (river valley projects), the Forest Advisory Committee, your district collector, MLA and MP. Name the project and its Parivesh proposal number.
  6. Stand with forest-rights claims. Help affected families file and follow up individual and community forest rights claims.
  7. Document what you see. Photograph surveys, drilling, felling or road work with the date and place, and share it with the groups above.
  8. Share, and correct. Share pages from this site on WhatsApp, and point people to the source when they hear a wrong number.
  9. Volunteer. Contact the groups above to help with surveys, translation, legal work or outreach.
